Recycle Plastic at Home Games
by posted 06/26/2009

The U-15 girls' team caught in a reflective moment.
Thanks to former NSA Board President Kevin O'Connell, we now have recycling containers at the Spring Creek fields.

It's a great addition to the NSA's "Grassroots Recycling" program, which works like this:

Assign a family to each home game. Then ask a player's parent to bring a large container or bags to that game. Collect the plastic water and juice bottles from your own team and the opposing team. If the recycling containers at the fields are full, take home the plastic from your game and recycle it in the large blue-and-yellow containers that the City of Northfield now provides to each residence.

Questions? Have a better solution? Please e-mail .

TODAY'S SOCCER PLAYERS WILL THANK US TOMORROW!

Minnesota Thunder introduces new youth pass
by posted 06/25/2009

A U-14 C-3 girls' player charges toward the ball.
The Minnesota Thunder pro soccer team is alerting soccer associations throughout the state about its new recession-friendly pass for kids under 18:

Now, with great pride, the Minnesota Thunder introduces a season-long "Shield Pass" for youth 18 and under. A mere $20 will get your child into as many games as they want in 2009 for EITHER the Thunder or Lightning. Not only is it a great deal, but ticket prices for parents now start at $5.

With theses prices and an amazing new soccer specific OUTDOOR stadium atmosphere , it's one of the best values in Minnesota professional sports!

Remember Photography capturing NSA season

The U-15 boys C-1 goalkeeper prepares to fire a shot down the field.
Professional photographer and devoted soccer mom Marie Frederickson (mother of former NHS standout goalkeeper Steven Schnorr) has launched Remember Photography in Northfield. She's also launched an exciting collaboration with the Northfield Soccer Association.

Marie will be attending home games at the Spring Creek fields and also is available to be hired for group shoots and for soccer tournaments, provided the team pays her expenses. In exchange for our promotion of her services, she will donate a portion of her profits to the NSA.

Team outings: Can everyone afford to pay?
by posted 06/02/2009

The U-14 C-2 boys' team huddles before a game.
Soccer season is in full swing, and it’s heartening to see teams bonding over outings like trips to Dairy Queen or pizza parties after the game.

The NSA board asks coaches and coordinators, however, to be aware that these excursions may not be affordable for all families. None of us wants a player to feel left out. Please be prepared, as a coach or coordinator, to make arrangements for players who can’t afford the expense.

Be aware, also, of any dietary restrictions for players, whether those restrictions are due to health or religious practices. Northfield is blessed with increasing diversity, and the NSA asks coaches and coordinators — as leaders in our program — to be sensitive to what that means.

Finally, if in doubt, ask any member of the NSA board! We would welcome the opportunity to offer guidance on matters of building community in an increasingly diverse town.

Reminders for Game Reschedules at Spring Creek
by posted 05/23/2009

A U-12 player finds his way past an opponent.
The rescheduling of home games at Spring Creek fields is going well this year. Thanks to the coordinators who are getting clear and complete information to the NSA rescheduler:

And thanks, too, to experienced coordinators Patsy Yurek and Lori Muhlenbruck for helping to explain the new MYSA procedures.

Here are a few reminders to managers and coaches that will help things keep running smoothly:

1)      Please send an e-mail to as soon as you know that you need to reschedule a game – even if you don’t yet know the reschedule date. That allows referee coordinator Hank Tetreault to cancel the referees who are scheduled to work.

2)      Once you have confirmed the new date, time and field with the NSA game rescheduler, you must alert the MYSA. This step is new this year! It is the responsibility of the home team to alert the MYSA – even if the opposing team requested the change.

3)      Go to www.mnyouthsoccer.org/hellopage1.cfm and log in under “managers,” using your team password. Then go to “reschedule” and click which game you want to reschedule. You’ll be walked through the details. The MYSA will send a requesting e-mail to the opposing team, which has to log in and accept the change. Then the MYSA will send a confirmation e-mail back to you that the requested change was accepted.

Volunteers needed to lead NSA's efforts in fund-raising, coordinating boys' and girls' traveling teams

The Northfield Soccer Association wants to recruit more soccer parents or other adults interested in soccer to serve on the NSA board. Interested? Attending our board meetings the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.

Key positions to fill include:
* Coordinator for Girls' and Boys' Traveling Teams: These essential positions, currently filled by Craig Hall and Simon Tyler, respectively, oversee tryouts, team composition and other important details for the traveling teams.

* Fundraising and Sponsorships: Help the NSA to recruit corporate sponsors, especially for the in-house teams, and to raise money in general for the association.

Interested? Contact any NSA board member (see the "About the NSA" tab at the top of this page) or e-mail

Parent feedback essential all year-round
by posted 05/01/2009

The Girls' U-11 team battles it out at Spring Creek fields.
Here are some of the ideas that parents have submitted to the NSA. If you'd like to submit your own ideas, e-mail or click the "feedback" button on the left:

* "I think a fun way to fundraise for the scholarship program would be to make a game between traveling coaches and traveling all-stars a yearly occurrence. Keep it simple: Each team sends two or three players, and we get a coach or two from each team, reserve a field, recruit some volunteer refs and we're set. Players could walk around collecting money from spectators, and we can have a donation amount." Interested in this idea? Contact Mary Foote at or 612-730-9349.
