Director of Developmental Programs

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. The role of the Director of Developmental Programs is to provide high-quality training to players enrolled in the Northfield Soccer Club’s in-house and academy programs, ranging in age from U4 to U10. The Director creates an environment for participants to have fun, learn the sport, and prepare for competitive play in the traveling program and beyond.
  2. The Director serves as acting head coach for all training sessions in the spring/summer and fall seasons, as well as the winter futsal season. Volunteer parent coaches provide support for the in-house program, and paid assistant coaches provide support for the academy program. All spring/summer and fall training sessions are held at the Spring Creek Soccer Complex, and winter futsal training is held in local school gymnasiums. 
    1. Spring/Summer In-House: Over the course of 6 weeks from late May to late June, in-house training sessions are held two days per week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The Director need only be present on Tuesdays (2 hours weekly). 
    2. Spring/Summer Academy: Over the course of 11 weeks from late April to early July, academy training sessions are held two or three days per week on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings (5-7.5 hours weekly). Friendly matches are held outside of this schedule, typically on weekends. 
    3. Fall In-House: For 4-5 total sessions in the month of September, in-house training is held one day per week, typically on Saturdays (3 hours weekly). 
    4. Fall Academy: From late August to early October, academy training sessions are held two days per week on weekday evenings (5 hours weekly).  
    5. Winter Futsal: From early January to mid-March, futsal sessions are held two days per week on weekday evenings, depending on gym availability (4 hours weekly). 
  3. The Director is responsible for leadership and coordination of the in-house, academy, and futsal programs, including implementing and improving upon a training curriculum, recruiting and managing assistant coaches, coordinating field set-up, setting up “friendly” academy matches with regional clubs, establishing and maintaining regular communication with families, and managing rosters.
    1. Training curriculum: Training should be focused on fundamentals and technical skills, with small-sided training beginning with 1v1 up through 3v3. In addition, small-sided games of 4v4 through 7v7 will be used to train team tactics. The academy curriculum should build off of the skills learned in the in-house program and prepare players for competitive play in the traveling program and beyond.
    2. Assistant coaches and parent volunteers: The Director is responsible for recruiting paid assistant coaches for the academy, as well as volunteer parent coaches for in-house and futsal, prior to the start of the season. The Director should provide curriculum and training and/or meetings to coaches to establish expectations and roles for these individuals. Hours for paid assistant coaches must be tracked and submitted to the Northfield Soccer Club Treasurer. The Director can identify additional opportunities where parent volunteers could be useful to support the in-house, academy, and futsal programs, and work with the NSC volunteer coordinator to fill roles. 
    3. Field set-up: Establish standards for field set-up, and direct parent volunteer coaches and paid assistant coaches to set up their training areas. The Director is responsible for ensuring field equipment carts are out of the on-site storage shed and ready for volunteer coaches to take to their field. Coaches should arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the start of the program for set-up.
    4. Friendly matches: Work with nearby clubs to schedule friendly competition and/or tournament participation for academy players with care to balance home/away contests. Establish rosters for these matches to ensure equitable playing opportunities. Tournaments and friendlies are not required but highly encouraged.
    5. Communication: Working with the NSC Administrator, send an email to all registrants at least one week in advance of the start of each season to provide an overview of the program and clarify expectations for players and families. Establish and maintain communication with players and families through a weekly email with pertinent information regarding the calendar and the curriculum.
    6. Rosters: Working with the NSC Administrator, set rosters by defined age groups to ensure equitable playing opportunities for all participants.  
  4. At the conclusion of the spring/summer and fall academy seasons, the Director, along with the input of assistant coaches, is expected to provide player evaluations to all academy players.
  5. At the end of each season, the Director creates and distributes a survey to all participants to gather feedback and suggest changes for future seasons.
  6. The Director is responsible for constructing an end-of-season report for the Northfield Soccer Club Board, and is expected to attend Board meetings as requested. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A demonstrated background in coaching the sport of soccer, with an emphasis on player development
  • Experience and/or interest in working with young players
  • Interest in youth sports and support of the mission of the Northfield Soccer Club
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with NSC staff and Board
  • Organization, attention to detail, and analytical ability
  • Able to use Google Suite (Drive, Docs and Sheets)
  • Self-starter and able to work independently
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check

CONDUCT and COMPLIANCE
During the term of service, the Director must:

  • Conduct: Use their best efforts to promote and maintain the success and reputation of NSC, and set, encourage and enforce the highest standards of leadership, fair play and good sportsmanship.
  • Compliance: Comply with all rules and regulations of NSC or as identified by the Board, including, but not limited to, its drug and alcohol use policies.
  • Reporting: Promptly report to the Board President all issues or problems that arise with respect to the conduct or compliance of any individual member of a team, a parent or a coach.

COMPENSATION and EMPLOYMENT STATUS
Compensation: $10,000 annual, paid monthly over 12 months.  

All employees will track the actual hours they work on a timesheet provided. Payment will be made on the15th day of the following month. NSC will withhold appropriate payroll taxes from payment.

Hours of Work: See estimated hours above. Year round, though this may vary with the season. No employee may work more than 40 hours in a given seven-day period without written permission from the Board President. All employees will track hours worked and duties performed. 

The Director of Developmental Programs is a nonexempt employee of the NSC. Employees must be authorized to work in the United States and able to complete Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Form prior to beginning work for NSC. In order to process payroll, NSC will need:

  • W-4 for each employee
  • Banking information for each employee for direct deposit (Bank Name, Routing & Account #)
  • Email for each employee so paystubs can be sent electronically
